The Eclipse – A spacious apartment renovation project
This light-filled, spacious apartment is located on the top floor of a multifamily housing building in Neo Psychiko, with equal care given to function and aesthetics. When we first visited the apartment, we were thrilled by its amazing 6th floor views of the city, and how the sunset cast beautiful hues into its interior. However, the existing layout was rather odd, both in functionality and aesthetics.
The kitchen had two entrances, one of which was superfluous. The storage space was inconveniently located and not easily accessible. The living room was wrongly oriented, not taking advantage of the beautiful views, and there was only one bathroom. Therefore, the most important step in the design process of this apartment’s renovation was the layout configuration. We focused our designs on a simpler, more functional floor plan by reducing any unnecessary spaces.
The aim was to create a completely new layout, that would best serve the needs of contemporary living in this 70s apartment. We wanted to explore the ways this space might be used as a modern residence, and it was important for us to anticipate the needs of a prospective owner. We decided to preserve several walls, as well as the basic separation between private rooms and shared spaces, other than the necessary structural elements.
The newly designed bedrooms are relocated to the east side of the apartment, an alteration that allows the morning sun to flood into the rooms. Moreover, the original bathroom was completely renovated, and an en-suite bathroom was added to one of the bedrooms. While, at first, we deliberated on retaining the three bedrooms layout, we ultimately decided that two spacious bedrooms and a second bathroom would be more comfortable.
The main living room and kitchen areas occupy the west side of the apartment. A focal element of the apartment is the gracefully arched passageway. It joins the living room to the kitchen and enhances the continuous flow of movement throughout the apartment.
The careful selection of materials and colors brings unity to the architectural composition and adds warmth to the apartment. Complimentary and modestly contrasting interior finishes bring forward a modern and bright environment. Along with the material processes, great care was given to the interplay between natural and artificial light. The view of the city is divided between the two sides of the house. The new layout invites the city into the apartment and adds dimension to the space. All these elements combine to transform this private space into a fluid setting, everchanging depending on the time, use, and mood of the person who experiences it.
